Poser My Life in Twentythree Yoga Poses [Hardcover] Lucy Edge Author Books
This book started out as a funny commentary on how much energy we put into looking like our friends and neighbors; to fitting in. Thus begins Claire's journey into Yoga. As Claire's understanding of yoga deepens, so does her understanding of her life. I could understand and empathize as she made sense of the life she had and was living. I found her honesty regarding her struggles refreshing. Thank you, Claire for demonstrating what makes a great memoir!Product details

Poser My Life in Twentythree Yoga Poses [Hardcover] Lucy Edge Author Books Reviews
I started doing yoga a couple of years ago casually and have become increasingly more committed and devote. I really enjoyed the combination of how she picks up yoga and learns different poses, using the pose metaphor for what was going on in her life, the challenges of modern mothering and contemplating our own family histories. I read some of the reviewers who talk about how she sounds arrogant and privileged and I just don't agree. It's a memoir, so with any memoir you're going to get some of "this is me talking about my life." If you're a yogi with babies and see yourself on a journey figuring out yourself as a mom, wife, career person, etc. I think you'll enjoy this.
I loved this book. Unlike several reviewers, I found yoga gems sprinkled throughout the book. The author didn't try to make herself liked; she tried to be honest. Marriage can be tough, and this was one of the most reveling books about living with someone prone to depression. I'm way beyond the child rearing stage, but the way she doggedly went about trying to do the best job she could with her kids was admirable. And painful. Seattle is one of the most unique cities in the country. Loved her description of many of the Seattle areas. As far as yoga, I've been a yoga student for years. This book had a lot of food for thought as to the varying philosophies of her teachers. Highly recommended.
This is a memoir by Claire Dederer, detailing her liberal upbringing as she works her way through the realities of motherhood and marriage.
For Claire, Yoga is her only "me" time. She and her husband are raising their young daughter; though, as is typical in most families, the majority of the child rearing falls to her. Her husband is a freelance writer and they struggle to make ends meet.
The book is less about Yoga studio practice and more about the philosophy of Yoga (though it doesn't come out and say so.) Claire realizes the effects that her rather unstructured upbringing had on her - some good, some bad - and how she is reliving them in her own marriage.
I wouldn't say that I loved the book, but it was a pleasant enough read. It's a bit too serious for just a beach read, but the thought process is similar to regular chick lit.
I love yoga. And I loved this book. The book is exactly what the title states. The author's life blended in with the poses she learns to get into. Yoga and how it affects her and even some others around her. She has a way with writing that would have me cracking up. Great timing with her humor. As a child of separated and then later divorced parents I could relate to so much of what she wrote. Also having had a parent from the same generation as her mother and how that affected much of their life choices and attitudes. This is the kind of author I would love to sit down and just have coffee with and conversations with as friends.
She talks about trying so hard to be the perfect mom in todays world of organic foods and coop preschools, competing with other moms for perfection while being each other's support system, the strange balance of status in the modern marriage, with a great man but who's still just a man and more sensitive than we think they are. She struggles with issues of her past and her childhood, with her mother in particular, and her mother's wild ways of the 70's and how disturbing that was. Then there's a major life change in the middle of the book, a move to the mountains the brings catharsis and comfort. Of course the whole thing is narrated through her ongoing yoga practice, which is a story in itself, from those first time new person jitters to the obsessiveness of a regular, grappling with the religious side of yoga as a white person, trying to understand the concepts while mastering the poses, finding out that our western minds aren't set up for contentment and stillness. I see a lot of myself in her and I laughed out loud almost every time I picked it up. Plus what courage to write autobiographically, for friends and family and children all to see. Very brave, honest, insightful and clever. I'd like to find her magazine columns and read her more often.
I love Claire Dederer's essays and I love the premise of this book. Friends loved this book. I am not sure what was missing for me, I guess I wanted even a deeper exploration of the struggles aligning life/poses/writing/parenting. At times the book seemed to float on the surface. But I can definitely say that may just be me and I would recommend it to others-just with the caveat that it might not be what they expected.
This was a great book. It really helped me understand the Northwestern American mindset & to a lesser extent the liberal mindset as well. I didn't really understand why people would make yoga and organic produce a central focus of their life, but this helped me see the world more through their eyes. It also helped me imagine what it is like to live in a moist, rainy environment. Plus it is an entertaining, fun read. I couldn't put it down!
This book started out as a funny commentary on how much energy we put into looking like our friends and neighbors; to fitting in. Thus begins Claire's journey into Yoga.
